British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "major assault" against IS targets in Syria, following an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
